Are you wearing too many hats – the 3 personalities of the business owner

It’s been a while since our last edition of “The Solutioneers Blog,” and I want to extend a warm welcome to our new subscribers who have joined us through The Leaders’ Library. For those who are new, you might be wondering about the connection between Solutioneers and The Leaders’ Library. Let me explain.

Solutioneers is my consulting business dedicated to empowering small business owners, managers and leaders, and private practice owners with the tools and strategies they need to succeed. The Leaders’ Library is a community platform we host, where we engage in valuable read-alongs and discussions.

Recently, we’ve been diving deep into “The E Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber in The Leaders’ Library. The insights from this book have been incredibly impactful, providing practical guidance on how to build a successful, sustainable business. I felt these lessons were too valuable not to share with you, our Solutioneers Blog readers.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be unpacking the key concepts from the book right here in the blog. Stay tuned for insights that could transform the way you approach your business!

Embracing Your Three Business Roles for Success

Running a business means wearing multiple hats – Every business owner must juggle three key roles: the Technician, the Manager, and the Entrepreneur. Understanding and balancing these roles is essential for building a successful, sustainable business.

Understanding the Three Roles:

1. The Technician is the doer, the one who is hands-on with the daily tasks. Often when we start businesses it is because we are strong technicians desiring freedom from a boss.

2. The Manager is the planner, the organizer who creates order and systems to maintain the business’s flow.

3. The Entrepreneur is the visionary, dreaming up new ideas and looking to the future.

Keeping the three personalities in check is Balancing Act.

Many small business owners find themselves stuck primarily in the Technician role because that’s where they started, that’s what they know, and that is where they are most comfortable. However, to grow and scale, you must also carve out time to wear the Manager and Entrepreneur hats.

In our sessions, participants found that they were predominantly spending time wearing the hard-hat of the Technician and many expressed the need to step back and focus more on managerial and entrepreneurial activities. But how?

Action Steps:

  1. Evaluate Your Time – Have a look at how you spent your time last week – and categorise the activities into the three roles. Reflect on whether you need to rebalance your time, giving more time to developing systems or creating space for more entrepreneurial thinking.
  2. Skill Development – There will be things that you as the small business owner do not feel confident doing – bei it the accounting or perhaps the social media marketing. Once you have identified the skill gap make a plan to address it, whether through a course, hiring an assistant, joining a supportive community, or consulting a mentor.

Balancing these roles isn’t easy, but it’s essential for building a business that thrives.

Till next time…
