Turn the Challenges of Management into Success in your Teams

Are the humans that work for you the problem, or the solution? With the right leadership I would bet 95% of them are the solution (there’s always one in the group…)

It all boils down to perspective. In every obstacle lies an opportunity waiting to be seized. Here are some nuggets that I have gleaned from the books that we cover in our Leaders’ Library read alongs.

Four keys to getting people to aim their potential in the right direction:

Crystal-clear goals and a reverse engineered roadmap to reach them (How To Grow Your Small Business, Donald Miller).

Communication is paramount—inspire others to embark on this meaningful journey with you by creating a story that they want to be a part of. Of course it doesn’t end there. Constant course corrections are necessary. Keep reminding your team of the destination and steer towards it relentlessly.

Who you have on board matters (Good to Great, Jim Collins).

Define the types of people who will excel in the various roles you have clearly identified, and hire (or shuffle) accordingly to assemble the right players for the journey ahead.

Company values aren’t mere words—they’re actionable behaviors (Dare to Lead, Brene Brown).

So your values are up on the wall, but what do they look like in practice? Define these behaviors to guide daily actions and propel the organization forward. Keep talking about them once the consultants have left. Praise using them, and give feedback using them.

Every team needs continuous consistent management (Radical Candor, Kim Scott).

A rockstar Operations Manager ensures continued alignment (to the direction you set in number 1), motivation, and accountability through regular meetings and performance reviews. If you aren’t great at this, hire or promote someone who is, so that they can help you get the growth you are after.

I would love to hear the nuggets that have shaped your leadership fo people. Drop me a line and share.
